Whilst away on a cruise, the whole boat was filled with both modern and past art. The collection was all over the boat, pieces on every level, and in the art gallery on the boat. There were names branding from: Marina Abramovic, Jeff Koons, Rembrandt, Picasso, Tacita Dean and many more.
It was Gonzalo Lebrija's history of suspended time: monument for the impossible 2010 photographic print that caught my attention the most. Luckily it was on the floor to my room, and so i was constantly presented with it. Every time it caught me in its spell. Will the car drop? Or will it stay firm? I don't know if one day i was expecting to have walked past it and for it to have gone/ fallen down. This is the Uncanny. It is wrong for this car to be placed so precariously, but to be so solidly grounded, as the water below it is not moving, suggesting that is has been there for a long time. I love the ambiguity in it, the questions, and the waiting. I found my self many a time just stood in front of it looking. Also, because of it being in a glass frame, you reflection was mirrored into it, allowing you to become part of the piece. You become a witness to the cars fate. I want people to become a sort of witness to my work when they see it, that they might have to recall whats going on or what has happened in the work if questioned about what happened to it. I enjoy the power it holds over its audience.
Secondly, Agata Stoinska's Mirror caught me watching it for a while. Initially you don't realise that what is in the mirror is not actually a reflection. This has a sense of the uncanny in it too, because what you should be seeing is a reflection, rather than you have just disrupted a conversation these two women were having. This is the Double. Are you seeing twins? Or is it more two sides to someones personality? It may be the repeating off someone at a later date, and the confrontation of the double. I am really intrigued with this notion, and aim to explore the double more in my dissertation.
