Recently, i have been talking to a nurse about the café morte talks, and she told me how hearing was the last of our senses to go before we die. I found an article all about this, and it says "how some people believe that as you die you slowly lose your sense of touch, taste, smell, sight, and lastly sound". This is why many take comfort in talking to their dying family members. However, we do not know what they are hearing. Is it muffled sound, distorted noises? Or can they hear precisely what is being said.
This has completely shifted my thoughts on whether i should have sound with my work. After viewing Tacita Dean's work with the relentless sound, that was the thing that stuck with you afterwards, I now believe i should have some sound to my piece. I want this noise to be ongoing, pushing you and one that stays with you after you leave and that you cant get from your mind. The next stage for my work, i want to see if i am able to place a film of mine onto an old film reel and have it played through, with that constant sound. It will also take the piece to the place of memory and nostaliga, something familiar and safe.
