Unfortunately i have been able to find nothing but a photo of Perkins work. However, it does help to give an idea of the type of thing which i could achieve and do. Unlike his interior, i would have an outside space. Alongside this, there is the interesting idea of having the security camera. I don't know if he has a live feed coming off his, but that would be fun to play with. He may just have the cameras there as a suggestion to it. Things would be presented in black and white, so much so that i believe it would come across as more plausible. Secondly, you would have the time running by, again making things look real. I find the fact that this has been presented in the gallery entertaining. I would not be able to do this - i don't believe, because of using live materials, things would die to fast for the piece to work. http://www.newcontemporaries.org.uk/artists/gary-perkins

At the moment i am secure in the decision of what i want to film and make, Uncanny gardens. However, there are many questions that i am raising about what to do when filming and afterwards.
Recently i watched Stepford Wives and i was caught up in it. I didn't watch and see it as these women were loosing all their power to the men and that it was an oppressive film. Rather i watch it and saw it for it's strangeness. The robot moving wives, the clean house and the immaculate gardens. And the fact that these men want their lives like this. But as the glitches in the women's robotic setups begin to fail, we see that it is not this idilic place to live. It is the perfect place, with small glitches that break the trend, the unblinking perfection. This is what i like. This is what draws me in.
Again, growing up i always watched Desperate Housewives. At the time of watching it i never knew about the connection it had to step ford wives. However, now after seeing step ford wives, the connection and parallels between them are so strong. In desperate housewives, it is not so much keeping things clean and tidy to satisfy your husband, but to 'outdo' each other - the other neighbours. There is also so much scandal that happens in the series. People get killed and buried in the back garden, men have affairs behind the bushes and children see and experience the cruelty of exclusion from their fellow 'friends'. My friend has recently moved into a gated community in falmouth, and it is the perfect reflection and set up of desperate housewives and step ford wives. The other afternoon whilst being there, the husbands were out playing with their children, on the perfectly mown grass - and all looked lovely. However, the whole time i couldn't shift from my mind/ thoughts, the question of what is being hidden here? What truly goes on here when peoples back are turned? What secrets have not been unturned? This all makes me more excited to start this work and see where it goes, and if other people get this uncanny feeling from it and formulate these questions. I use this term loosely as things always change and i am happy for things to.
I love the quintessential idea of the suburban american scene, the white picket fences and the beautifully green well cut lawns. A place which is safe for children to play in, but often somewhere to show off to our neighbours and be proud of. For me, gardens were a family orientated place, somewhere of safety and fun. The familiar. It was a place where you could let your imagination run wild. A place where friends would come over, and you could spend hours making use of the natural toys there. The garden is this comfortable place. I want to change this, make it not so comfortable. Often, things do go wrong in the garden. It 's where we bury our secrets, past animals and hide the clutter of our lives. Yet, over the top of that, we build sweet little flower beds, grow vegetables from the decomposed lives and try to make it our own small bit of utopia. My final year has come, and again i am in a different studio. Last years wishes were just that i had a warm space, as last year i was so cold that i spent most of my time not able to be in the FREEZING studio! However, lamorva is beautifully warm and full of light. My plants will grow wonderfully here..i hope! So yes, the plan is to continue with the idea of growing gardens. My plan for my dissertation is the uncanny, and how when artists take that total control type view over their work and all that they do, then the work falls into the uncanny. Finally, the struggle then begins again to find artists, the bain of my life. How does everyone else do it. And also finding theoretical stuff to go along side my work. I found last year that films actually helped quite a lot, so perhaps, we shall go to them first! Oh, and i have gillian as a tutor which will be great, as i need to refine my filming and displaying work, and i believe she will be of great help to me here! ...at least from what i have heard! |
