So group crits are full on, and has given me a lot to write about!! So much...
This will probably not read well (worse than the rest!) as I am just going to put down everything that was said so it may not flow well.
Firstly people were asked to just describe my work by not actually knowing what it is about. So these were some of the words given to me: preservation, investigation, scene making, evidence, court, a natural scene made from thrown away/ discarded materials, unnatural materials below, story behind.
So the first interesting thing from this was that it was true, I was making a natural scene on top of rubbish ultimately, a bit like a land fill sight.
Someone said that I was making the uncanny. This word is currently important as Crewdson's work is often described to being like this. So the things which are uncanny in my work are: the documenting, making, the size and the place.
The next thing was thinking about places that are unnerving and uneasy, somewhere that gets you on edge when you go there. So we were talking about this woodland, and how I am thinking about producing an ally way. Lucy suggested how when you go in a cellar the connotations from this get you unnerved. This is true. We were then questioning why this is. Tab mentioned that it is something instilled in you, that your parents would always say "oh don't go there at that time....don't walk there by yourself", things like this. I still have times when I am walking in the evening that I will often look behind myself to see if there is anyone following.
What then was mentioned was how I am going to film it. I said that I will use different lights and hopefully blow some smoke through it and make it theatrical, yet still still like a photograph. We also spoke about at what angle I will film from. It was mentioned that I look from a birds eye view. But because I want to keep things quite literal I do not think this would be a god idea, as we as humans have not really experienced this or would be able to relate with this. So I think I will keep to a low down position. Maybe you are the person who has been hit down, perhaps you are the stalker, or you are the person scared in the film. This led us on to talking about the fact that I do not watch scary films. is it a way of dealing with fears and phobias? If I make things to do with them then I can get over my fear, work through it. This then made me think that there is probably some Freud theory on this.
Because of then talking about film we then thought of films which may be beneficial. Psycho and Hitchcock were mentioned.
What then was questioned was that, the more I leave out the more beneficial it will be to my audience. They will be able to make up more in their head the more that I leave out. This is true. I think I will capture one photograph like this and then with something hinting very strongly to death like a noose?
Finally I mentioned sound. I said that I might keep it silent or I might have the sound of a crow in the background as they bring forth their own connotations, and I believe will easily set the mood. Lucy said a lot can be gained from silence and I agree. So again this will be another moment where I am just going to have to try out different things.
