I decided to have a look at these two brothers as they too make scenes that are unpleasant (putting it lightly). Their methods can be seen as very controversial and offensive, but as long as they get a reaction, they seem to be happy. To me, they seem to only touch on these hard-hitting subjects rather than delving into them seriously. Yet in a good way they are using this to their advantage as it has the public conversing about them. They do genuinely seem to choose subjects that they want to inform their audience about. However, through the way their work is presented and what accompanies it, makes it either comical or startling and looses its values. It is this that stops the audience from seeing the true messages behind it as they are derailed by what they have just seen. As well that the Chapman Brothers look at these subjects and try to inform us, it can be somewhat hard to read, when they seemingly place a defensive blanket over the top. Do they do this so they are not annoyed/ upset if their work is slated as they have decided themselves that it will be and they have accepted this? I believe it is why out of all their work that i appreciate the smaller subtle works of theirs, which often gets shunned to the back.
Needless to say, their small scale sculptures, like the reproductions of Goya’s work made into sculptures show a high level of skill. There is so much time and dedication within these pieces that is immediately noticeable. Every inch of detail has its place and purpose within the work, there is no part of it which seems to have just been put there for the sake of it – which is good when thinking about their randomly placed theme thought process. This seems to be only area of their work that shows restraint. No, their work is not to my taste, and my work will not go down this offensive shocking route, but I can appreciate and applaud them for their craftsmanship.
