silence.
no what can you hear? your breathing, the heating pipes, movement in the next room, the buzz from the lights
John Cage 4:33 was a piece of music composed by him where effectively no instruments were played, and everyone was immersed in total silence. But that silence becomes shifted into the sounds which you can hear around you. this piece is quite compelling as everyone hears their own song. No version of this will be the same, everyone has their own experience, it is a personal piece. It can have very different feelings for people to. If someone listens to this in a concert hall perhaps they feel anxious as they are conscious of not making a sound. But maybe if you are listening to it from your home, it might be comfortable, a homely sound. You hear your family in the next room, the sound of a car passing by. It is such a universal piece transferrable and adaptable to different settings.
What would happen if i had pure silence to accompany my film footage. I often show it in the galleries where people may be talking, and that gives my work too much a an easy tone, not what i want. However, what if i was to ask my audience to listen? May it drive them slightly crazy due to the fact that my film is hardly moving and now that there is no sound. .....OOOOOOO what if i was to have noise cancelling headphones with the piece. That would mean that all you would be able tot hear is your own heart beat. Yourself would be the music to the piece. mmmmm nice!!!
