In June i was thinking how i would spend my summer holidays and what work i want to do next. My friend pointed out to me a website where artist are asked to create commissioned pieces. There was one opportunity for something to be produced in a neighbouring town to mine. After reading over the advert, it wanted 6 artists to produce work which was related to WWI . This seemed perfect to me as my sculptures are based around destruction, loss and the absence of people. I could not think of a better theme/ brief. After i had thought about it, i decided to put in a proposal, not thinking i would get it but at least it was good practice to do this. This was what i sent in:
Proposal for piece of art.
My work is about curiosity, confusion and deception. I make small models, based around popular news stories and then photograph these sculptures in a way to make them seem life-size. Therefore tricking my audience with what they are seeing, blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction. In particular my main focal point is around missing people.
I feel that a piece based around the WWI would run extremely well with themes I am currently exploring, and benefit my art practice tremendously.
I propose two sculptures both made from natural materials.
1) The first would be a small scale model, (45cm X 30cm), of the trenches and no mans land in France. There will be tiny pieces of sections material from the mens uniform, blood and puddles to hint at the conditions faced.
2) The second would again be a small scale model (45cm X 30cm). This time an open field, half will be of grass the other side of ploughed soil. There will be a fence running through the centre with a tiny white feather caught together with a small scrap of clothing.
Neither of these pieces will include human figures as they have fallen and become lost from the concept. There are just suggestions of people having once being there and the rest is left to the mind to decide. These two sculptures will be accompanied with a small zine. Both will be type written on moleskin paper. The first one will include names of people who had fallen on the front line with a few edited photos of the actual sculpture, deceiving the eye. I will do the same with the other sculpture but in this zine there will not be any names, as the men who were shot for desertion were all but forgotten. They supposedly never existed.
My piece will be about men missing physically from both the sculptures and in history.
The two sculptures will be placed on plinths. They need to be somewhere where the audience will be able to walk around and become immersed within the piece. The plinths will be around 150cm so that you are able to look both up and down at the sculptures. I will be installing and removing my own work as it will be of a managable size.
My budget will be spent on materials to build both the sculptures and the plinths, and also reading/ visual material to ensure the compositions are displayed as accurately as possible.
Kidderminster arts festival would be a great place to present my work as it would be a fantastic opportunity to exhibit my work somewhere local to where I have lived all my life. KAF is very popular and growing every year, and because of this I know that my work would be widely seen by a diverse range of people. It would be a superb opportunity to bring my work into the public domain at such a well publicised event!
Thank you for reading my proposal and I look forward to hearing back from you.
