Some of the first idea’s over using shadows as a way to created demonic forms was by Samuel Van Hoogstraten’s drawing ‘the shadow dance’. In it he showed his idea of shining a light from the floor upwards and having people stood in front of it to cast shadows. With this, he tries to tell his audience that these things aren’t real, just a form of manipulation.
Rafael Lozano Hemmer later made a piece of art in this same manner. His was an outdoor interactive installation entitled ‘Body Movies’ (2001). He has large lights projecting up onto buildings and the public can come and make their own shadow show in front of them. The whole piece is about perception, interaction and ultimately understanding. There is now no manipulation of the viewer, because for their interaction, they need to understand what is going on.
Unlike where you understand the shadows place in these pieces of work, I don’t want mine to link up. That is where I want to get my audiences confusion and unsettling feeling from – the illogical.
