In order to round up my project, I wanted to create one more sculpture to be hung alongside my other one. With this one i took on what had been said at the group critical discussion, to produce one smaller piece to see how the two pieces interact. For this sculpture i wanted to make something which was the opposite of the one which i had already done. The first one was very organic, in both the shaping and the material. I wanted to continue this organic theme, but make it slightly more manmade by using metal as my main material. The paper and wooden cocoon seems quite sturdy through the use of many layers and attachments. The metal cocoon, i felt, needed to have a sense of fragility with it. Through the use of using a minimum amount of wire, it had a very skeleton and vulnerable feel to it. These two pieces seemed to be very contrasting and creating oxymorons between themselves. The metal cocoon being more fragile compared to the one made from cardboard and wood. I believe this to be a key point in my work. I want to further explore the use of oxymorons.
The photos which i gained from this piece were very harsh and seemed to have a sense of danger about them, through the sharp angled side of them. The feeling that i got from the room when i went in with the metal cocoon shadow from the cardboard one was stiflingly different. It was a weird point of realisation of how two different materials, yet shaped in the same way, can produce such contrasting shadows and atmospheres.
Yet, this sudden change in the atmosphere has helped me to decide what i want to create within my shadow work. This sense of safety and comfort at one minute, suddenly changing to an atmosphere of danger and hostile next. I know feel like the next thing to do it to begin thinking of shadow ideas where i am able to create two different atmospheres in the way that you look at the piece.
