I have began to have a deeper appreciation for Christian Boltanski. The three main things he focus' on are: death, memory and childhood. He deals with the fact that life is neither this nor that, there is no pattern, model or thing that it should be. He creates contradictions within his work. It may seem that Boltanski's work is focused around death and loss, but ultimately, it speaks of life. "It is the spectators looking at the work who make the piece using their own background". He makes work that is unfocused, so that when people come to view it, they can take from it whatever they want - the work is open to their own thoughts. His shadow pieces are haunting and playful, he wants to bring in all elements. "he creates a fantastical world of ghostly silhouettes".

"Its not about telling the truth, but making the felt" "I am a teller of tales" - parables. His art acts as a way to tell people about hidden things inside him, things that he would have never told anyone, until he recognises them within his own work. All the work he makes, come with the desire to stop death.
"Each of us create our own sort of mythology, a sort of dream life, in a way, an emblematic life"
Boltanski's work is extremely personal, and focus' on the fact that every one is different - each person is unique
