I am becoming increasingly interested in sound within my own work and stumbled across an article online. It was speaking about cave art and how sound impacted greatly on what was drawn. Many of the cave paintings were made in response to spirits, however it has been questioned that maybe these sprits were actually echoes of other people within the cave itself. The sound of peoples footsteps or thunder may have sounded like hooves of horses. This then resulted in many depictions of hoofed animals. Another point that was made was that the areas of the cave which receive the most echoes, has the most paintings.
There is also an interesting thought about Stonehenge. That those stones were chosen in particular because of their acoustic abilities. These are the only stones when struck to make sounds like bells or wood. It has been suggested that these stone were placed together as a giant musical instrument.
"That even today, sounds can be used to manipulate a person's perception of the world around them and lead to illusions inconsistent with scientific reality."
I want to manipulate my audiences perceptions through sound and not solely visuals. So as long as i have a good sound with my photographs, my audience will still be able to get from it a sense unease.
