I began my woodland the way i had previously built my other sculptures: wood, newspaper and papermache. This gave me the optimum shape. This shape evolved from when i went to a woodland to start looking for miniature tress to go in this piece, and the steep banks drew me in as somewhere that would be dangerous.
I was struggling on how to make miniature trees as all of the websites that i went on kept telling me to buy them, there were no actual plant solutions. Other people suggested grape stalks, however, i had such a strong image in my head that i knew that these would not work as they would be TOTALLY the wrong shape and would not look realistic. Also, the whole thing of buying pieces, at the moment, to me seems as though you would be cheating as you are not making it yourself. However this presents problematic things with it too, as i seem to be now limited as to what i can create as i cannot make everything! So it seems to be that i may be sticking to natural, urban scenes.
Nevertheless, whilst searching through the woodland i came across some plants which had died off from summer and had nearly enough the perfect shape for what i desired. Once i had cut them all i tweaked them a bit by shaping the tree as some where all bending the same way. I drilled holes in my sculpture and placed them in. After that i mixed together soil and glue and began covering my scene, then once that was dry i added a little moss to areas.
I still want my piece to look wet and sodden from mud, but naturally, it has dried out! I experimented with varnish and wood stain. Varnish seemed to work the best on the tester piece, but i have not got round to buying some to add to me woodland. Yet, as i had decided to film and photograph it at night i believed that you would not be able to see the wetness anyway.
In my next scene i shall hopefully incorporate water through something like varnish. It is always hard trying to include something as natural as this.
