This group crit was an interesting one as in this one it wasn't just people who produced sculptures, in the group were painters, drawers, etc. So this was great as they came from a totally different viewpoint and they hadnt seen/ knew about my work - even better! The tutor who was involved in our crit was Gillian. She comes from a more video basis in art and i found it helpful from hearing her views on my work. I think i will definitely ask for a tutorial with her next term.
I will now list the ramblings/ ideas/ reactions to my work here:
I will now list the ramblings/ ideas/ reactions to my work here:
- liked the fact that you had to enter a space, confined, alone and more intense. Desolate, like you're at the scene of a crime.
- choose what projected over, why was it on a tv, could it have been over an object (douglas gordon) or a wall.
- The sound is its own object. Should really look into more sound artists. (Elizabeth Price?!). The noise of the birds almost bounce off things, its around you consuming you.
Maybe with the sound choose a noise that doesn't necessarily fit. Birds suit the woodland. Maybe choose a 'wrong' sound. Non-dijetic. Use sounds that are hard to listen to. Uncomfortable whispering? surround sound? - The whole experience presents an unsettling and uncomfortable feeling. The 'not so sure of scale' gives off a disorientating feeling. It's very uncanny. Questions raised to whether you know this place.
- when deciding what to include in the footage, virtually no human. Yet, there is one moment where you see feet. Someone said that this reminded them of the film predator. In there, there is just a portion of a figure, almost a shadow, this slight hint creates an unsettling atmosphere. Maybe i should include slight human elements?
- You don't know if something bad has happened here as there is no physical image of that, but you get there strong sense that something bad has happened. Ori Gersht's work deals in this similar manner. He shows nothing traumatic, but the context is.
