Paths of Glory is a film set in France in WWI and focuses on three men who are Court Martialed for cowardice. However, you are shown that it was nothing to do with them being cowards. It was actually due to the leading General issuing them a task which was unachievable. Because this task was not achieved, to set an example, he ordered for three men to be shot for cowardice. However, none of the men had shown cowardice. Therefore, these three men are drawn at random. One corporal tried to show the other generals that they should not be put up for punishment as they have done nothing wrong. Yet in the eyes of them, someone needs to be punished and they are not going to punish their own rank.
What i mainly wanted to get from this was to understand more about the protocol, and i did learn this - but not much. However, i learnt that even then there seemed to be a system of a 'last meal'. This itself is an interesting topic, i have often watched programmes on death row. I don't know what i would choose as my last meal. After that, they spent the night in this barn, left to think about the impending morning. Whilst in there they were given the last rights. I wonder with these modern hostages being shot if they are given the last rights when they know that they are going to be shot. Finally, after one has gone crazy and been placed into a comatose state, they are taken outside. The are asked if they would like a blind fold. I found myself sat there asking myself if i would want one. And i thought, No. I would want to be able to feel the air on my face and hopefully the sun. To me, having my face covered would be more terrifying - if it could be. Their wrists are bound behind their backs and they are left as people move out the way. The orders are called, and it is over. They are dead, yet everyones life still moves on. They were tied to a pole and had a stack of sandbags behind them. This will be the beginning of my set up. I think i will have the sand bags placed against a wall though, as i believe the photograph which i will gain from it will benefit this.
